You have heard it before. Your mother told you, your doctor told you, and you have researched it for yourself. You may believe what you read, but how much difference does eating breakfast REALLY make? I will tell you!
If you were strategizing on how to GAIN weight, I would tell you to definitely skip breakfast! This will keep your body from ramping up its metabolic function. You would want to keep that as low as possible to conserve all of your precious fat stores.
You would do what sumo wrestlers do: Eat a big meal before bed and skip breakfast in the morning. You would then workout/work, and build up a strong appetite for lunch while keeping your metabolic rate as low as possible. Now eat a big heavy meal followed by a period of relative inactivity. Conserve those calories! You might then finally work out again (or maybe for the first time of he day), and of course, finally follow it with a big heavy meal and then sleep. Good job! You are on your way up in the Sumo world.

Not what you are aiming for? Then take this to heart. It is true that eating breakfast will help you lose weight and keep it off. It is one of the 2 most important practices to have to be a successful looser. (the other being regular exercise.) This is why:
- It brings your body from "fasting" mode back into "abundance" mode. During the fasting mode (sleep), you are operating at your lowest metabolic rate of the whole day. Your breathing slows, your body temperature drops, and you don't move much at all. In the morning, unless you give your body some new fuel, your body assumes that it now must operate under fasting conditions, like you are in a famine. Intellectually you may know that there is plenty of food to be had, but at a biological level, you body is operating like it does not know when food is coming, and it better do its best to conserve its resources. Remember, the success of a living organism is measured it its ability to survive in lean times and through adverse conditions, not in how svelte it can be!
- It boosts your physical energy and mental energy. It is true. When you have eaten, it signals your "engines" to come up to speed and you will have more energy. As a result you will move more even if it is to run around, do errands, work around the house, or go exercise. As a result you will maintain your muscle mass more effectively, and as we all know, it is muscle the burns fat --24/7! Your thinking will also be clearer and more focused.
- It will curb your appetite. For some people eating breakfast will, right off the bat, give them more energy, curb their appetite throughout the entire day, and give them more energy. The right breakfast will raise your blood sugar levels, although not too quickly, and is low enough on the glycemic scale so you do not have a blood-sugar crash after an hour or two.
For some people eating in the morning will make them hungrier throughout the day or make them drowsy and exhausted, or both. I used to be one of these people! I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to eat the right breakfast. People are different. They have different activity levels, different metabolic types, different food sensitivities, and different lifestyles. Coming up with the right breakfast formula might take a little work. After all, we did not come with instruction manuals. With a little bit of trial and error, and maybe a little bit of help, it is possible to find a breakfast solution that works for you.
